Guns in America

The articles that were provided from the group were all very informational about guns. I really like how this group was very engaged with the class. They brought in discussion questions that made all of us really think. Since they let us choose a question to answer, I chose the question "Why is America so obsessed with guns?" This question makes you sit back and start really thinking about why is that? Why do they feel the need that they absolutely have to own guns? The more I though about it, one answer came to me. Power. Americans want power and will forever crave it. I believe since it is written in the constitution, the second amendment, guns are associated with power, individualism, and bravery. Americans will do whatever they can to fulfill that. Guns are romanticized into that idea.

In the article they provided, The Psychology of Gun Ownership, it lists character traits that gun owners tend to carry. Such as impulsiveness, anger, internal conflict, etc. I saw one part of the article that mentions how people who have more of a racist view/mind, are more likely to be opposed the the idea of abolishing gun laws. This is really important to look at because a lot of people who are victims of shootings, tend to be minorities. It is a sad reality that we are living in. Some people, whites, say that racism is no longer around. That is just not true at all. Racism is all around us and happens everywhere. Just by being a person of color, your life could be in danger. It's just so sad and so utterly terrifying.

I never understood why Americans value guns over lives. It's completely inhumane. But women's basic rights are being taken away because "it's murder." Yet they don't consider guns to be murderous weapons, they consider it as "protection." People who own guns and are doing killing sprees are murders. It's just not hard to value children lives, elderly lives, teen's lives, POC lives over guns. Having stricter gun laws is something we definitely need. No child should ever experience a school shooting. It's insane how many of us are desensitized to the amount of school shootings that happen because they happen often. It's embarrassing that we are the only country who value guns over lives. We are the laughing stock because the government can't make a right decision when it comes to basic human rights.
