After Parkland

 Watching the documentary, we go through the lives and grieving family members who are mourning the victims of school shootings. The trauma that these students have are real. It's so heartbreaking and upsetting that the family members have to accustom their lives without their loved ones. In the documentary, a student who was a friend to one of the victims mentioned how the image and sounds were still vividly replaying over and over in her head. Having stricter gun laws is so important. It is absolutely insane how America still have not put tighter restrictions on gun laws. 

The trauma of the surviving victims of these shooting now have to live with this survivors guilt and trauma. Adjusting their lives without the people they were used to be around everyday is a drastic change. The speech made by the student at March for our Lives was incredibly moving. It was so powerful, her voice strong although you  could see on her face that she wanted to break down. Once she was done listing the students' names, she went silent. That was such a powerful move in her speech. The protests that happen throughout the country can make a huge impact. The walk outs, protests, are all peaceful. 

Valuing guns over lives is genuinely infuriating. People who own guns always throw the "I have the right to bear arms," or "The second amendment is my right." Why can teenagers buy a gun but can't rent a car until they're 21? Why can teenagers buy a gun but can't drink until they're 21? Do they not realize this is not about them? That there are other people who have lost a kid, student, niece/nephew, grandson/daughter, boyfriend/girlfriend, sister/brother, aunt/uncle, etc. So many protests have happened and yet there is still no change to these gun laws. There are a lot more school shootings that we don't know about, that the media does not cover.  Families have lost so many people, kids as young as 5 years old. When will America start taking innocent lives seriously? How many more lives have to be taken away from families until we can have stricter gun laws? How many more families have to lose their loved ones?

 Every time someone took a step, you realize that most of them went through trauma experiences throughout their childhood. I think why people end up incarcerated is because they try to fill that void that wasn't filled in their childhood. I think that's also the reason why people tend to stay in toxic relationships. Because that toxicity, verbal abuse, etc., feels so familiar. It's upsetting that people through that over and over. Childhood trauma is real. Childhood shapes us to the person we are today. It damages people or helps them. Some people become successful despite their trauma while others suffer through life. So many of those men in that prison went through similar experiences. I hope that it brought them closer together instead if just pushing those feelings down. It is so important that people take the time to heal together. It helps with personal growth and will make people feel free in a way.

Environmental Justice Presentation

 What are some ways you have seen environmental justice connect with race and poverty? Factories, machines, etc., are always placed near the low income neighborhoods. It goes to show that people do not care about their health and intentionally place these buildings near them. It is such a huge risk increase with lung cancer, respiratory problems, and other health issues.  I really like how to was brought up during the presentation of how having those fancy cars, is deep rooted into "masculinity." How the revving the engine is seen as cool and tough.  They see electric or "normal" cars as weak. People want to have an image portrayed of themselves to everyone else. As a student said, Americans tend to over consume things.  In wealthier neighbors/communities, their  surrounding are more green. Meaning they have green access. Big makeup companies tend to push out "color - correcting" products. These products tend to make one's skin color appear lighter to fulfill the beauty standard. So many skin whitening products are always promoted.  It is a sad thing that women have to alter their appearance so they can feel accepted and loved by society. Although, confidence is a big part that is played as well. If someone does not feel confident in their own skin, they tend to change their appearance. I believe we all do this. It could be from the clothes we wear, to shoes, to makeup, hairstyles, etc. It's sad that society will always have a beauty standard and will always push that out onto other people.  Makeup companies push out these skin care products that are promoted to hide dark spots, dark complexion, freckles, pigmentation, etc. Reading the article made me realize it does have a racist background.
